    In northeast Iowa, Pike picked a fort site 500 feet above the river, in present-day Pikes Peak State Park. It was built instead on river flats in Prairie du Chien.

    The Mendota Bridge crosses the Minnesota River but has a superb view up the Mississippi to downtown St. Paul.

  4. Round Tower at Fort Snelling.

    Built around 1820, Fort Snelling's Round Tower likely is the oldest building in Minnesota.
